Yes it is a good e-reader.
I have found that the Nexus 7 ended up replacing my Sony 950 e-ink reader. My eyes are very sensitive to backlit screens so I was surprised at how well I was able to read.
I keep the Nexus 7 brightness at 1% and I use Moon+ Reader Pro which allows me to lower the brightness in the app well below the settings offered to me in the Nexus settings. For normal lighting I usually keep the brightness in Moon+ Reader Pro at -12%. But a quick swipe up or down the left side of the screen will quickly adjust the brightness up or down to suit my environment.
I also use calibre to manage my books and bought my Nexus 7 because one of calibre's main developers was going to create an Android app to integrate Android tablets with calibre. This app is
Calibre Companion (CC) and I use it to transfer books to my device and to manage the selection of ebooks on my Nexus. I no longer import books into any android reader app I simply launch the book in my favorite reader from CC.
