Most writers want to do what they do best--write. Not become publishers. Of course, there's a lot of publishing-related work involved, but once you're into being a publisher, it's not even the same ballgame. Even the limited free promotion I'm doing right now (see free ebooks in my sig line) is taking an enormous amount of time and energy that could be going into writing the next book. It's a hard tradeoff to judge.

And I cannot emphasize too highly the need for good, professional editing. Every writer needs it, even the best.
