That's not exactly what I meant. I was referring to books that made the professional cut, were published, went out of print, and later came out as POD reprints from a small or alternative press. There are thousands of them, and most of them never see the light of a bookstore shelf. You can find them if you look specifically for them online, but they're probably expensive, especially compared to a cheap used copy.
I don't know any professional writer who's happy with sales of a hundred copies. Or less. But that's frequently what happens.
Compare that to earlier years, when an eventual pb reissue might sell thousands of new copies. It's not that it never still happens, but fewer and fewer midlist authors can reach that fruit now.
