I don't know... maybe this applies more to "mainstream" fiction than the genres I usually read. I suppose some marketing must be happening in the world of science fiction, but I'm not seeing much of it. I seem to find out more about new authors from friends, blogs and discussion boards, and occasionally Amazon recommendations than any other means.
