It seems likely that covers are more important to people (e.g. me, and Blossom?) who tend to be "visual" thinkers, and less so for verbal thinkers.
Like Blossom, I have a really hard time remembering books' names, but if I see the cover, I will instantly remember the book if I've read it, even though I've read tens of thousands of books in my lifetime.
Re-issues of DTBs with new covers have sometimes fooled me. In olden times I learned to browse a few pages of older books before buying or borrowing in order to avoid the sinking feeling I used to get as I cracked the only book I'd brought on the plane with me, only to realize I'd already read it. With eBooks, I guess I'll be dependent on Calibre to tell me when I've already read something. At least there will be no problem with running out of reading material while travelling!
