The desire to constantly upgrade is one that we need to get out of. Companies know people will constantly upgrade so why should they invest in developing a rock solid unit when "oh well they will buy a new one in 12 months". Gone are the days of something being built to last.
Maybe they are experimenting with design. One of the snarky comments that was made when one of the iPhone versions came out was 'how will others know that I'm better than them if the phone looks the same'. This type of comment was meant to insult iPhone users, but there is the practical part of the problem: if all generations look the same, an unscrupulous person can sell an older version as a newer one.
