I don't think the line is all that fuzzy, Neko. It's just that during their work time they have to work on the manuscripts they have already acquired, go to meetings, write cover blurbs and what not. Parts of the gigantonormous slush pile is probably also read by editorial assistants.

Wow. That's pretty cool.
All in all, I got about $ 2000 for my debut novel -- and all of it went back into promotion. When I accepted the offer, I knew the advance and the royalties were below what is considered standard, but I decided it was a good chance to break into the market.

Besides, I figured that not every editor would take the risk to acquire a newbie writer who lives on the other side of the planet and isn't even a native speaker.
