Flashing a Kindle Touch, but getting "waiting for device"

I have acquired a Kindle Touch demo unit with the intention of reflashing the firmware to make it operate as a regular Kindle. Geekmaster's post on debricking (http://www.mobileread.mobi/forums/sh...d.php?t=170929) seems to be the right path to follow, but it doesn't explain the process of getting the device into fastboot mode. Instead the reader is directed to a "Select Boot" thread (https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho....php?t=169645&). In a WinXP VM in Virtualbox I ran mfgtool.exe on the device after I put it into recovery mode, selecting the "kindle fastboot" profile. lsusb now shows the device as "Bus 001 Device 058: ID 1949:d0d0 Lab126". At this point, I think I'm supposed to be able to run fastboot, but it stalls with "< waiting for device >". What am I missing?
