Well, no ... it would be an .AZW or topaz book and non-Kindle devices don't read those. As people have noted .... you can't buy a "Kindle" book without owning a Kindle. You can certainly purchase mobi books, where ever they are sold, without owning a Kindle.
Amazon no longer sells books that are just mobi format ... they also have DRM, which is what actually makes them Kindle books in the true sense of the word.
And, you edited your comment, so I'll edit mine. Yes, they probably could sell mobi format books and not lose a thing. And, who knows ... that might happen in the future. At the moment, and less than a year into marketing, I don't think it's going to happen really soon. But, you are certainly correct with regard to me. I would have purchased my Kindle regardless of the great format wars.
