I ordered my Kindle Paperwhite on Friday (18th) and received it today. I have a defective one as well, a couple of dead pixels and a blue blob in the middle of the screen (will link to a picture later). The credit card verification is so if you don't return the old one you get charged for another one. I've returned a few Kindles and had to verify my card each time.
