I'm sure the timing is deliberate. This gives stores a chance to clear out existing inventory (i.e. the 650) with special holiday deals. Also, I don't think Palm would be able to keep up with the demand.
Speaking of the Treo. I'm looking at a 2yr subscription (monthly €25) for €200 with no entry fees. Good deal? I've decided I want a smartphone. (My 5yr old phone is dying, so I need a replacement anyway.)
