It's especially strange because some famous foodstuff was originally made from horsemeat or sometimes donkey like Salami or Sauerbraten (in english marinated beef, but in germany it was traditionally made of horsemeat).
Apart from religious reasons I think the most important influence in the last 30 or 40 years is little girls beeing horsefans in nearly all western societies and therefore making it totally unacceptable to eat their beloved friends and comrades
