I thought since I am very susceptible to eye strain reading backlit screens that I would have the same issue with my Nexus 7, but I am able to drop the brightness down to 1% and I have zero eye strain.

The reading software I use (Moon+ Reader Pro) recently added a feature that allows me to reduce the brightness below what is possible using the Nexus 7 controls so when I am reading my display is set to -12% brightness. I know a minus percentage doesn't make sense but I am happy with this setting.

With few exceptions there is no conversion needed as long as the books are DRM free. Setting the Kobo as the page setup essentially just ensures all images are resized small enough to fit the Kobo's screen size. So if you had comics in CBR format you might have to convert them so the images would fit the Kobo's screen. But the vast majority of Novels are mostly text and the text of ePubs reflow you are most like safe not doing a thing.

Good Reading.
