When I was about seven or eight, my parents used to make me do an hours reading before I was allowed to watch TV. As I got older and started getting homework they relaxed and it was up to me whether I read or not, I continued to read for that hour and it's something that's stuck with me. I'm now 37 and I still make sure I read for at least an hour, it's also something I've encouraged in my kids.
It's a bit of a chore for my son, but my daughter always has her head in a book.
