That look likely culprit

Have you tried reflashing it with one of the older builds like 538. While it does not work correctly on the 512 models, It did install on my new Cybook when the newer firmware was not installing. if it installs, it will be easy to overwrite it with a new version like 678/685 etc.
She used 708 fmt. And used the same file for both attempts. And the same SD card - properly formatted to FAT32.

I've now used both 708 and 708Fmt. But I can't even get to the point where it recognizes the SD card is in the slot because it won't finish even booting the OS.

If I could at least get to the point where it recognizes the SD card, I'd format the device and re-install Build 538 and work up from there. But it won't even get to the point I can do that. It's locked up tighter than a drum at the initial boot phase. And I'm loathe to crack the case as this is a *NEW* Cybook, less than two weeks old.
