You're right - random browsing is not easy; there are just too many books in the store. I generally do a more directed search, searching for either an author or a publisher. (Eg, I'm a science fiction fan, so I use searches like "Gateway science fiction" to find all the books published by Gateway). I also rely a lot of recommendations, from the "Reading Recommendations" forum here at MR, or on deals in the "Deals and Resources" forum.
Yeah that's the problem, unless you know who you want it's pretty painful - even if you filter to a category like "science fiction", it's populated with a lot of soft porn - I've got nothing against soft-porn, I just don't want to read it.

I'll check out the forums you mentioned.
