Several people here (including me) have reported the same problem at various time. It usually turns out to be a broken substratum, which is non-repairable. You might trying contacting Kindle support and asking if they can replace the device, but there's no reason why they should. I was lucky - they replaced mine even though it was out of warranty, but don't count on that in your case.
