Actually, I could see it making a difference if the medium was actually USED for something that enhanced the reading of the story. Something such as a special font or a certain type of paper or even an image heavy design. Of course all that would be dropped for the mass market editions that came later and once again became just text on a viewing surface.

Yes, that can make an experience difference. I once printed out all of Le Morte d'Arthur using a large calligraphy font on fake parchment paper for a friend in the hospital. That was 10 years ago and I believe they still have it and use it to read with their kids. (Though they did make a binder for it.)
