actually i find the harry potter books to be far from dumbed down. the concepts, characters and situations are a darned site smarter and more adult than many books i've read that were written for adults.

and as fantasy goes, i think it's excellent and dark. in fact, the last book or two are too dark for me. for me to really get the most out of any book or movie, it needs to take an occasional a break from dark or i become a bit desensitized.

Dumbed down - fine for kids I guess but don't kid yourself this is not high quality literature. Not that there is anything wrong with pulp fiction (I read loads of it that is clearly 'labelled' as such).
