I had this debate, amongst others, with my father many times. Never really came up with an adequate reply until after his death

Now I would tell him that fiction is a vast thought experiment. It allows us to explore what ifs. Shrodringers Cat is thus a short story. A work of fiction.

Of course that is just a clever answer. It is entertainment. Just as more than half of what we eat is just entertainment
