Plugboard only works sometimes

I have a plugboard for my Kindles (K3, K4 and PW) to move series information into the title. It's very straightforward, moving author_sort into authors and this string {series}{series_index:0>2s|[|] - }{title} into title.

It has worked flawlessly for a very long time but now, for no reason I am able to deduce, it only works sometimes. The problem appears to be on books recently added (or modified) to my Calibre library. So far all old books I've tried work fine. I realize how unrealistic this sounds as I'm sure the plugboards are only activated at the time of actually sending to device, but there you go. If there's a pattern, that's the only one I can see.

I've made a cursory search and I see a similar problem was reported once but then it had to do with DRM. None of my books have DRM so that can't be it.

Two weeks ago I got my PW and last week I first noticed this problem. Presumably a coincidence as I now have the same problem across all my Kindles though it never failed previously on K3 or K4.

I have deleted the plugboard and then added it again. Didn't help.

In Mobi output options I had it set to 'both' but have tried with just 'old' or 'new' to no effect. No other options are ticked.

What else can I do or look at? I'm using 0.9.9 64-bit and had the same problem on 0.9.8 32-bit.
