1) If you are on a 64 bit computer run the 64 bit version of calibre, it
can use more memory
2) Delete teh files from the folder and copy them back in small batches

Well... Both comments are rather odd, because it's just my normal library I moved to an external disk. I was able to open it and use it the normal way. After moving it, I am just not able to connect to it any more... But I will serach for the 64bit version and have a go. Also, what is considered "a very large number of books" ??? 100? 1000? 10000? 100000?
