paragraphs is a separate bug, and a lot worse, because it can't be circumvented by any means, as far as I know. There's only the awkward workaround described earlier: highlighing the two neighbouring passages separately, then attaching a manual note to the 2nd highlight to clarify that it's supposed to form a single unit with the previous highlight. That's surely a suboptimal solution unbecoming of the advanced iOS platform, to put it mildly.
