Thinking about it, responses here on MR may be skewed a bit. I haven't tried to keep count, but my impression is that most folks participating here heard about ebook readers, realized there were more than one, found out about MR, and came here to get information to help them make a choice. They specified what they wanted to do with the reader and what sort of content they needed to read, and got advice about which reader best fit their requirements and budget. They made an informed decision, and were more likely to be happy with what they got. I haven't seen too many of the "Oh, gee, I just got this ebook reader and I don't know anything about it and what do I do next?" sorts of queries.

And, I'm a great example of that. Owner of two, never posted a comment on Amazon.com about the product. Not a single comment, and I'm a big fan. Actually a HUGE fan.

It works for you.

I'm just sayin' that 34,000 and it just happens that nine other people in two teensy tiny little towns in Texas have bought the same device?? Not to mention the people who have Sony readers ... I'm just talking about Kindles here. Well, when you figure that there are (I think this is the correct number) 270,000,000 people in the United States and only (let's see .... 1,500 people in Horseshoe Bay and about 5,000 in Marble Falls) 6,500 people in my general area ... well, either we are overloaded with amazingly erudite people, or there are more Kindles out there than the gentleman from China estimates.

The latter, I think. But the fact that all those folks in your area bought Kindles is a testament to Amazon's marketing power. Lots of folks visit Amazon daily, and see the push for the Kindle, and see the volume of content available for it, and the ease of getting more at prices less than elsewhere.
Sony is playing catchup there, with deals with retailers like Borders in the US and Waterstone in the UK to provide additional sales channels. It's not like most folks browse the Sony site every day...

There you go ... I think I've just made a great contribution to science. They used to refer to humans as the "tool using ape." Then, they discovered that other apes use tools. After that, it was the "ape that uses language." But, wait ... turns out that other apes may not have the facility of speech, but they can use language. So how about ... "Man ... the ape that makes stupid guesses."

I have a different take. I sometimes call man "the rationalizing animal". Most of what passes for rational thought consists of coming up with good reasons after the fact why what we already decided to do was not only a good idea but the best move under the circumstances. It certainly doesn't happen
before the decision is made...
