if you want to try out a reader before buying it, take a look at
the hookup thread, to see if any kind-hearted mr members live near you and would be willing to give you a demo over coffee. also keep an eye open for a meetup in your area (check the lounge for meetup threads), which is an opportunity to see several different readers.
