That is interesting. In German there is the term "Bessere Hälfte" ("Better half" if translated word-by-word and AFAIK the "best approximation" to SO) which is often (not always) used as a derogative.
(And the definitely derogative term "Lebensabschnittsgefährte"/LAG "companion in parts of life"
)
