Before factory resetting, you should copy everything off the USB drive. You can read about what options are available to you in the Developers Corner. Things like diags mode, USB export, etc.

The password probably did NOT encrypt her books, but only locks access to her main menu. You can wipe the password and other configuration info without wiping the books by zeroing the persistent userstore partition (/dev/mmcblk0p3).

Check out the Select Boot thread in the Dev Corner forum, to see how to boot to diags. No jailbreak or other modifications needed. You can export the USB drive from there, or get root shell where you type linux commands, or whatever you want...

A passworded kindle presents very little challenge it you use the tools available in the Dev Corner...
