Something else you should be aware of concerning "noise cancellation", true noise cancellation is done only for pure sine wave noise (or combinations of pure sine wave noises), The way it does this is by generating an exact duplicate of the sine wave but 180 degrees out of phase. It works very well for things like airplane engine noise but not so well for things like normal conversation.
I actually used mine on an airplane when the engines were running to help me hear the stewardess with her safety speech (at least until she made me take them off so I would hear her). She never understood that I could understand her better with them on because the engine noise was mostly canceled.
The ones I have are the Bose noise cancellation ones for $300 (the ones just before they came out with the ones that can be fold 90 degrees for easier packing. They are completely over the ear type.
All that being said, they do help "muffle" the lunch crowd noise, and my music helps drown out most of the chatter that gets through.
