I had the same trouble for the first few days, and I'm not 100% sure my theory is right, but I suspect it was the magnetic sleep acting up. I could mash the power button all day trying to get it to wake, but if I ran a small magnet over the lower right corner, everything was hunky dory. I do have a magnetized device in my opposite pocket, so it's possible the two were interfering with each other.
Either way, if this happens to you again or anyone else has the trouble and isn't using the magnetized amazon cover, find a small magnet and see if that'll wake it.
