I've been using Smashwords since 2010. Everything people have been saying is spot on: its style requirements are finicky, and it can be very slow in getting books out to the affiliates and getting sales reports back in a timely fashion. That said, it's still a good way to get your books out to a wide audience.
The cut you'll get going through Smashwords is 60% when selling through the affiliates (like B&N and Apple) instead of the 70% you'd get from directly publishing with them. Direct sales from Smashwords are only a tiny fraction of what I earn from the affiliates, but for me at least it's worth it for the convenience.
