You know, I thought the _Little Fuzzy_ books wouldn't fit Jerry at all, but you're quite right: there's probably a fascinating back story to Jack Holloway, and that's something Pournelle probably
could do well.
I thought of Space Viking simply because of the parallels between Piper's Federation and Pournelle's Co-Dominium universes, with the rise, fall, and rise again of those interstellar civilizations as the backdrops for stories. But yeah, Pappy Jack was a Character, and there's doubtless a lot to be told about him.
One of the things I mourn is that Piper was one of the first to actually deliberately set a series of stories in a created universe. It's common practice now, but was less so when Beam was writing. (Though various authors attempted to tie published works into a common setting after the fact, like Michael Moorcock.) Piper kept a notebook where he tracked the timelines for the stories and the directions he intended to go. Those were lost on his death. I can't help but wonder what they might have contained.
