Amazon made a mistake many years ago and has not repeated that mistake. The indie book dealers had to remove access to books from the major Publishing houses when agency pricing came into play. They could not pull the books from devices but they removed them from peoples accounts.
The reality is that your ebooks are not "safe" unless you store them on your computer and remove the DRM. It is far too easy for any company to remove access to your ebooks if you store them with the company.
The likelihood of Amazon, Barnes and Nobles, Sony, and Kobo going under and your losing access is pretty slim. The likelihood that any of the above bookstores pull books from your device is pretty slim. The best thing you can do is keep copies on your computer and be prepared to remove DRM if something weird should happen.
