It can. A new book may mean a new author, as well as a new world, new cast of characters, and new style, tone, and outlook.

Getting into the new book can require more mental effort than re-reading a favored old title. Sometimes, you're tired, and in what an old friend described as a "comfortable old shoe" mode in your reading preference.
