No problem with Fusion here either.
I don't quite understand why a VW-based setup should "mess up usb timings"? IMHO that's nonsense, at least if you have no other "bandwith-hungry" usb-device connected during the update..
I am using VMs (not only on the Mac but also an a PC) all day at work and did indeed several firmware-upgrades for other devices that way. Never had any problems.
