DAvid, I had to reinstall the new upgrade twice but finally managed to get the Welcome Message after the second attempt and it seems to be behaving much better, very rarely getting the menu at the bottom pop up. Although I used Kobo to upgrade, the final try I used a straight wifi connection which did the trick! The moral seems to be dont use Kobo to upgrade for me. Thanks for your help.
