I have both brands and I don't think the Sony's "technology" is behind except where it comes to the lit screen. I think the Sony will do everything that you want better than the Kobo, annotation-wise and for library books (Sony lets you borrow directly on the reader) . The Kobo doesn't do these as well yet. Just get yourself a good light if you need lighting...
