I bought 2 Glo's Oct 4th at Chapters here in Ottawa, Ont.
One to replace my wife's K-T bought last fall and one to replace my K-T purchased mid July this year.
Set up was very easy for both via wifi. Firmware 2.1.4
I was very impressed with the performance increase both in page turns and processing of large number of e-books residing on an SDHC card as compared to our K-T's.
Both screens had no flaws in the light distribution skin.
I am not bothered by the abnormality (or unevenness) of the light distribution where the LED's are located at the bottom of the screen. Kobo has produced a way of minimizing the effect by allowing the user to turn on a dark bar across the bottom for those that find it distracting.
I have had no issues reading Kepub books with or without the light.
I cannot say the same for books accessed from the micro SDHC card.
I found that the K-Glo would often reboot when coming out "Sleep" to continue reading an e-book that resided on the SDHC card. The e-book page would appear but my next action ( page turn or menu access) would usually cause a re-boot. This was pretty well guaranteed when the light was on. After the reboot I was able to read normally (with or without the light) without any re-boot issues until the next reading session.
This was happening with both units, more so if the light was on before putting them to "Sleep".
On reading the various comments here in the forums I figured I would give Kobo a chance to resolved these annoying issues.
As far as I am concerned Kobo managed to do that with FW 2.1.5.
I no longer have reboot issues with or without the light on while reading an e-book stored on my SDHC card and coming out of "Sleep mode".
This to me was the biggest bug and only one that I was aware of.
The Glo is much more responsive dealing with page turns, library page scrolls as well as up-dating of the library page icons. The creation of "Shelves" as well as the "Library" searches and adding of books to the "Shelves" is much faster than the K-T was. (each processing the same volume of books). So is the typing on the keyboard.
The only concern and question I have is "How fragile is the light transmission film?". I did some reading on the technology when it was first announced for the "Barns & Noble Glo" and it sounded like the screen can easily be damaged. If creased (scratched) the light will bleed through the damaged area. So I would recommend being careful when handling any sharp/pointed objects (such as pens) in your hands and reading the K-G at the same time.
As for our K-T's both have also been updated to the latest FW and will probably be gifted to family members or kept as back-up units but it would be very hard to go back once you have experienced the Glo.
IMO the technology is the same across all the new self contained lighted e-ink devices.
PS: I still see chapter numbers as well as page numbers on the bottom of the page for Kepub books and as before just page numbers for non-Kepub books.
