Two of my grandsons own Kindle Fires. They are both 3, with one turning 4 in a couple of weeks.
The one turning 4 can read just about anything put in front of him. The younger one is just starting to sound things out and looks at books that are read out loud on his KF. Both boys play games on them also.
Both have owned their KF since shortly after release and neither has any kind of damage. Kindle Fires are built very sturdy. Not sure I would want them to have access to my eInk devices.
