If you do a factory reset, then I suggest you:

- Start the desktop application and let it do its sync from Kobo to your desktop
- Do the factory reset
- Connect the device and let firmware download and copy to the device.
- When that finishes and it starts copying the books over, let a couple go over and press the "skip" button (from memory it's "skip").
- Eject the device, let it do its install and do some testing.
- If everything seems OK, connect again and get the desktop app to sync the books.

The above should separate the relatively short upgrade from the much longer setup of the books. And if it doesn't seem to be working, you can always go back to 1.9.17.
Basically looking for any "N3_FULL" files first. They were the largest extraneous file 'type' that took up precious memory on the device and filled up the .images folder. Didn't help so I tried erasing the sqlite file (nothing to lose at this point). Big mistake.. Didn't get past the happy 'face' with blocks cycle. Before reading this post, did a factory reset and just installing the firmware part with the desktop and simply cancelled the process when it got to step 4 (syncing with kobo.com for the kepubs). Restarted the device. Seemed to work. Inserted my sdcard and waited the 4-5 hours for it to process all 2191 books. Finished a few hours ago and all sideloaded epubs I tested with earlier work now with covers and all. None of the previous problems have cropped up so I think I'm all stable now.. Just took over 20 hours total to get it right. :P Hopefully it remains stable after I sync back all 1072 kepubs from kobo.com Monday. Shelves work but I wish they allowed you to order the books up and down as you wished. I'll just have to work on renaming the books to get them in the right order for now.
