If all you care about is PDF viewing then yes, any kind of premium tablet is a waste of money. Surface, iPad, and Samsung/Acer/Asus, etc
Your best bet might actually be a Nook HD+ or the Best Buy Flex or some no-name *large* Android tablet. Those will easily save you $200-300 and still get the job done.
