When my daughter was 13 we refurbished an old Compaq laptop that we got at a computer fair, loaded a Linux distro, tweaked it, etc. She's comfortable with technology, and loves to read, but says she isn't interested in ereaders. Since she was nearing college age (she just started last August) I held off, in case the college had a preference for a homework platform -- but so far it seems they don't, so she's still reading paper books.
My son is also a big reader, but he has no interest in ereaders, so there's just my JetBook and my wife's Ipad.
