Because we already have three ways to turn pages. One is using
the black-square button, the stylus, and the trackpoint.
Modern chm and pdf books have lots of links in them and traversing the
books is becoming a pain. so instead of a single button, we'll have to click
the menu at the bottom-left, click on another tab and then click the back
button. A bit tedious if you ask me. So the functionality is there, I'm asking
if we have a way to make is more easier to access.
Thanks.

It is not possible to customize the buttons by user. But in the next comming version of PDF Reader we have changed the logic, how buttons and joystick have to work. Now page up/down buttons are moving the viewport to the next screen (it can be next page or just next part of the page if you are reading a multicolumn document). Stylus will be using as "hand/panning" tool, "zooming tool" or "annotation tool" depending on selected feature. Left/right buttons of joystick are using for horizontal adjustment of viewport. Up/down buttons of joystick - for stepwise +/- zooming.
The new update (version 1.8) will be available next week.
