Wondering about Shelves and calibre

I have one ongoing "mystery" with shelves and am curious if others see this.

I just did a reset of my Touch, got the 2.0.0 update etc, and have reloaded a few books onto it.

I have calibre set to use both a custom column and to base shelves on the series name, and currently I have a plugboard to just add the series_index before the book's title; for series I am more likely to find them via shelf as opposed to via the main listing of books.

When I unplug and then reattach the Kobo to the PC, and take a look on the device view, I see the books correctly on the shelves I placed them, but I also see them on shelves "P", "T", "S", "J", "B", "5" etc; many books seem to be flagged as being on a shelf that is the first character of the book's title. But... to make it stranger, this does not happen to ALL books.

Anyone else seeing anything like this?

*NOTE*: I realize I am using a non default in the sending books to devices option for the save template. I currently have
Code:
{author_sort}/{series}{series_index:0>2s| - | - }{title}
. Maybe I should try with the default
Code:
{author_sort}/{title} - {authors}
