Just to make sure:
You don't have to use gift cards.
You can do so, of course, if you want to.
But it's no necessity to purchase from Amazon, since the introduction of the international Kindles.
I've switched from Germany to US and back forth just 2 minutes ago, all with the very same German credit card. I've got an UK account as well. A friend of mine even has a Japanese account.
