Certainly people can think them "strange", but to laugh at someone for being afraid of something is a different matter entirely - that's just being cruel (IMHO). The whole point about a phobia is that it is an irrational fear. If you are afraid of flying, or of spiders, or of Daleks, or of whatever else it might be, saying "there's nothing to be afraid of" is useless to the person involved. They probably know that as well as you do, but it doesn't help with the phobia one jot. I speak from personal experience of that, unfortunately.
