I don't really know. Since I see reference online to it being "Chiefly British", I would guess, as you have, that Canada is a possibility, and then also guess at New Zealand and South Africa, which also often share similar terminology (for example, knowing what a "shandy" is, even if they make them differently).
For what it's worth (very little of relevance), a favourite seafood item is the
spanner crab, and
Sidchrome (Australian tool manufacturer) has the motto "You canna hand a man a grander spanner".
