I always like to have a hard cover for my Sonys, and the Sony ones are just so well designed I don't mind paying a bit extra for the "lighted" version - probly not a lot more than a separate light anyway. And the light does a very good job from the right angles, and is neat and unobtrusive when not in use.
I reckon they're hard to beat - and I've yet to have a damaged reader (fingies x'd!)

Oh, and I use fast-charge "StayCharged" duracell rechargeables, which seem to last for ever.
