The eink colored particles are suspended in oil, and not only does the viscosity increase (thicker oil) when cold (below 25C/78F), but the particles can also stick to the bead surfaces (also causing ghosting). A few full-flash updates can dislodge most of those stuck particles, and help warm up the oil in the eink. It can take more than three full-flash updates to get a clean display when it has been sitting for awhile.
