It is my guess that the light will come on for awhile when you tap the power button if it was completely off, then resume its previous setting after a suitable timeout.
If it does not, it probably will (in a later firmware update) after they get enough complaints.
Waking it up in the dark NEEDS it lit long enough to adjust the backlight, in case it was off.
And if it is missing that feature, there will surely be a hack for it, until amazon gets around to adding it.
