Vergil (* 15. Oktober 70 v. Chr. in Andes bei Mantua; † 21. September 19 v. Chr. in Brindisi), eigentlich Publius Vergilius Maro (nach einer in der Spätantike entstandenen Schreibweise auch Publius Virgilius Maro oder Virgil), ist neben Horaz der bedeutendste römische Dichter der „Augusteischen Zeit“.
